Understanding the Different Travel Insurance Types: Single vs. Annual, Individual vs. Family Plans

Single-Trip Travel Insurance

Ideal for occasional travelers, single-trip insurance covers individual trips, typically lasting up to 180 days. It’s cost-effective for infrequent travelers and easy to purchase online with prices going as low as $4/day for a 3-day trip to Southeast Asia.

Example: Lisa and Amanda are university friends planning to take a long post-graduation trip to Australia. They seldom travel and even if they did, they go on overseas vacations once a year with their own families. For them, the single travel insurance policy is a more suitable choice in Australia.

Annual Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

Designed for frequent travelers, annual multi-trip plans cover multiple trips within a year. You only need to purchase it once for 12 months of coverage, making it a great option for those intending to make multiple long trips or short getaways abroad in a year.

Example: Joshua flies frequently in and out of the country for his business trips. As he works as a legal advisor, his job requires him to travel between Singapore and Thailand twice or once a month. Each trip will last for about a week. In this case, multi-trip travel insurance works best for him as he wouldn't have to keep getting travel insurance before every trip.

Individual travel insurance plans

Going solo as an occasional traveller or frequent traveller means that you’ll most likely need a single-trip individual travel insurance plan or an annual multi-trip travel insurance plan, depending on the frequency of travel.

Family travel insurance plans

Family travel insurance plans usually cover you and the members of your family who travel with you on your trip, with a maximum number of adults and children to be insured per policy purchased. The people who are insured under a family travel insurance plan may comprise of you and your spouse, and/or your children or grandchildren.

What Do Singapore Travel Insurance Plans Cover?

While pricing is important when comparing travel insurance, factors like overseas medical and trip cancellation coverage are equally crucial. Coverage details vary by insurer, so here are key aspects to consider when choosing the right plan.

Overseas medical expenses

  • Claim for necessary and reasonable overseas medical costs incurred within a certain number of days of your trip (usually 90 days).
  • Coverage limit is specified according to the selected plan.
  • Some plans have tiered coverage limits for different age groups.

In-hospital cash overseas or allowance

  • Reimbursement in cash for hospital stays.
  • Commonly included in many plans, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Emergency medical evacuation and repatriation

  • Fundamental coverage for costs incurred during emergency medical evacuation and repatriation (including repatriation of mortal remains to Singapore).
  • Ensure someone contacts the insurer’s emergency service on your behalf, providing: your full name, trip dates, NRIC/FIN number, policy number, location, and contact number. As well as the nature of the emergency and required assistance.

Trip cancellation and interruption

  • Coverage for trip cancellations, postponements, delays, and interruptions.
  • May be applicable if you or relatives traveling with you are diagnosed with severe illness or injured before the departure date (subject to terms and conditions).

Baggage and personal belongings

  • Coverage for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage and belongings.
  • Baggage delay compensation if your luggage is delayed.
  • Some providers can also offer separate coverage for gadgets like phones, laptops, cameras, etc.

Pre-existing conditions

  • Not commonly included in most plans, but available with certain insurers like MSIG, Income Insurance (formerly known as NTUC Income Travel Insurance, and Etiqa.
  • Usually has higher premiums compared to regular plans.
  • Provides coverage for overseas medical expenses related to pre-existing conditions.

Does Travel Insurance Cover Cancelled Flights?

Not always! While travel insurance includes “trip cancellation” coverage, claims are only valid for insured events like illness, accidents, or unforeseen events (riots, natural disasters). Be sure to check the policy for exclusions.

Flight Cancellation Due to Known Event

Flight cancellations due to events already publicly known at the time of ticket purchase are not covered, as you're expected to be aware of them. However, coverage applies if you bought your flights and insurance before the event was made public

Flight Cancellation with Refund / Replacement

If your flight was cancelled but you were put on a replacement flight, or your fare was refunded, you will not be able to make a travel insurance claim under the trip cancellation benefit. In general, travel insurance is only for unrecoverable costs. However, you may claim for trip delay benefits, such as an extra night's accommodation or extra meals.

You Cancelled Your Own Flight / Trip

Travel insurance typically covers events beyond your control. If you decide to cancel your trip, you generally can't claim anything unless your policy includes a "Cancellation for Any Reason" benefit. However, during pandemics or major events, airlines may waive cancellation penalties as a goodwill gesture. Always check with your airline and insurer for updated policies during such situations.

How do travel claims work?

Before you make a claim from your travel insurance provider, there are several important things to take note of, whether it is for claims related to your COVID-19 diagnosis, loss of baggage, trip cancellation, or other reasons. These include knowing what type of plan you purchased, when did the incident/illness occur (pre-trip, during-trip or post-trip), what belongings or items to claim for, and who are involved.

Step 1

Get your supporting documents ready

Most travel insurers require claims within 30 days. Submit via mail, WhatsApp, their app, or online portal to avoid policy breaches. Keep originals for 6 months in the event the travel insurance provider needs to sight them. Required documents often include personal info, medical reports, ownership proof, trip records, and reports (e.g., police, airline).

Step 2

Fill in your details and attach your supporting documents in your submission

Log in to your insurer's claims app or portal. Fill in your info, and the necessary details for the claims (email address. policy number, departure date or policy purchase date), upload soft copies of your documents and submit. Alternatively, mail hard copies of your original documents.

Step 3

Receive an acknowledgement email and await for settlement

After submitting, you'll receive an acknowledgment email. Your claim will be reviewed. For COVID-19-related claims, contact the provided hotline or email. Upon approval, your insurer will coordinate payments, often offering cashless reimbursement through PayNow or iBanking for speed and convenience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is travel insurance and how does it help me?

Travel insurance is essential for overseas trips. It covers accidents, medical expenses, trip disruptions, and lost baggage. It's affordable and can protect you from unexpected costs.

What's the difference between single-trip or annual multi-trip travel Insurance?

  • Single-trip insurance covers you for one trip, ideal for individuals or families going on a single holiday, especially longer trips (up to 180 days).
  • Annual multi-trip insurance covers multiple trips within a year, each under 180 days. It's best for frequent travelers (10+ trips a year), offering convenience and cost savings as you're covered for the whole year without needing to buy insurance for each trip.
  • Are family travel insurance plans cheaper?

Most insurers offer cheaper premium rates if you purchase your travel insurance plan as a family.

Can I buy travel insurance once I'm overseas?

No. Travel insurance has to be purchased before your trip commences. If you buy travel insurance after your trip commences and you try to make a claim, your insurer may not honour your claim. You should buy your travel insurance after you’ve booked your tickets as travel insurance also protects you from trip cancellation.

How do I compare travel insurance policies?

Travel insurance is a relatively simple insurance product. All travel insurance policies will cover you for personal accident, medical and travel inconveniences. However, if you intend to rent a car or participate in underwater sports like snorkeling or diving, you might want to get a travel insurance policy that provides those additional features. Does travel insurance cover flight cancellation due to illness?

You can generally make travel insurance claims that arise from unforeseen illnesses, but only if the doctor certifies you too ill to travel. This means you have to be really, really ill, not just suffering from a slight case of the sniffles. One big exception to take note of: You won't be able to claim if it's a flare-up of a pre-existing medical condition. That is, if you already have asthma, you can't get compensation for missing your flight because of an asthma attack. You are expected to have known about and prepared for this risk. Technically, you CAN cover such scenarios, but only if the policy specifically states that it covers pre-existing conditions. These tend to be significantly more expensive than regular travel insurance.

Is there a difference between family travel insurance plans and group travel insurance plans?

Family travel insurance plans are designed for immediate family members, offering tailored coverage for spouses, partners, and dependent children. They typically provide family-specific protection for events like family-related cancellations and medical emergencies. These plans often come with a single premium, making them cost-effective. In contrast, group travel insurance plans are meant for diverse groups of travelers, including non-family members such as friends, colleagues, or organization members. They offer flexibility in coverage, allowing each participant to customize their protection based on individual needs, making them suitable for a variety of group compositions.
