Not sure which type of credit card you should choose for online shopping? It all depends on how you like to be rewarded, and your spending habits. Generally, cashback credit cards are best for regular, consistent spending, such as groceries, petrol, bills and so on. This is because they either have a minimum spending requirement or a cashback cap, or both. Rewards cards, on the other hand, are more flexible. There is no minimum spending requirement, and you can exchange the rewards points for miles or vouchers once you have accumulated enough. However, most rewards cards have a monthly expenditure cap of S$1,000, so they are not suitable for big spenders. Air miles cards tend to have less attractive earn rates than rewards cards for online shopping. However, if most of your online spending is on travel bookings, consider miles cards that offer promotional earn rates with partner sites like Agoda, Expedia, etc.
Apart from these credit cards’ rebates or rewards structure, you may also want to check if the issuing bank has any good promotional tie-ups with your favourite shopping websites. For example, each bank has exclusive long-term promotions with Lazada, Shopee and other online marketplaces. Those who shop frequently on such platforms may like to check what sort of discount or promo code that credit card can offer. Most of these promo codes or vouchers can be combined with your credit card rebates or points, which can double the online shopping discount you finally get.
