In Singapore, when you're heading abroad, you'll often come across two broad types of protection: travel insurance and travel medical insurance (or international health insurance). The main difference lies in coverage breadth, trip duration, and intended purpose.
While travel insurance is designed for short-term holidays or business trips, travel medical insurance is aimed at those living, studying, or working overseas for months or years. Let's break down how they differ.
Key differences between travel insurance & travel medical insurance
Category | Travel Insurance | Travel Medical Insurance |
Breadth of coverage | Covers common travel problems: trip delays and cancellations, lost baggage
Includes medical emergencies while overseas
Comprehensive protection for the entire travel experience | Focuses almost entirely on medical-related expenses only
❌ Excludes trip disruption and baggage benefits
Standalone or international health coverage |
Trip duration and purpose | For short holidays or business trips
Typically up to 90 or 180 days
Designed for temporary travel | Designed for long-term stays
Relocating for work, remote "digital nomad" living, or overseas study
Coverage extends for months or years |
Medical scope | Emergency focused coverage; only unexpected and emergency treatments abroad
Once stable, you should return to Singapore for ongoing care | Comprehensive health protection overseas: Includes both emergency AND routine medical care
Extends to chronic conditions, dental treatments, and maternity needs |
Pre-existing conditions | ❌ Most policies exclude pre-existing conditions by default
Optional pre-existing conditions add-on available for coverage
Limited chronic condition support | ✅ Some plans cover declared pre-existing conditions
Subject to underwriting (the insurer's assessment of your health risk) and extra premiums
Better for ongoing health management |

Quick comparison: Which do you need?

You have pre-existing medical conditions that require ongoing management
You’re a digital nomad or long-term expat
Factor | Comprehensive Travel Insurance | Travel Medical / International Health Insurance |
Best for | Short trips, holidays, business | Long-term stay, expats, students |
Medical focus | Emergency treatment only | Routine, chronic, and emergency care |
Trip disruptions | Covers cancellations, baggage, delay | Usually not covered |
Cost drivers | Trip cost, travel duration | Age, health, medical scope |
Post-trip care | Limited follow-up in Singapore | Ongoing coverage overseas and in Singapore |
What about your existing health insurance?
Most Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) in Singapore only cover hospitalisation within Singapore, while some give limited overseas emergency coverage. Generally, IPs don’t provide full travel insurance or long-term international medical protection, so don’t rely solely on your local health plan when travelling or moving abroad.
It’s better to purchase international medical insurance instead. These cost more, but offer full-scale health protection including routine care, chronic conditions management, and emergency medical treatments.
