What is the difference between travel insurance and flight insurance?

The key difference is that flight insurance focuses solely on issues relating to your airfare—like cancellations, delays, or missed connections—while travel insurance provides a much broader “safety net” for your entire trip.

In other words, flight insurance is narrow in scope (protecting only your flight investment), whereas travel insurance is a holistic plan covering a variety of risks from departure through your return to Singapore.

Key differences at a glance

Feature

Flight Insurance

Travel Insurance

Primary focus

Covers flight-specific issues (cancellation, delay)

Protects the entire journey, from departure to return

Medical coverage

Usually limited or excluded

Includes emergency medical, hospital, and evacuation coverage

Trip beyond flight

Rarely covers hotels, activities, or local disruption

Covers prepaid hotels, tours, activities, and ground transport

Purchasing

Buy as an add-on via airline checkout

Buy via insurers or comparison sites as a standalone or customisable plan

Which is more worth it?

For flight insurance (trip protection)

  • Primarily reimburses you for non-refundable airfare if you cancel for a covered reason (such as illness)

  • May extend to missed flight connections, some airline schedule changes, or in rare cases, accidental death during the flight.

For travel insurance:

  • Provides all flight insurance protections plus a full suite of other benefits

  • These include medical emergencies, hospitalisation, evacuation, loss/theft of belongings (luggage, phone, passport), trip curtailment, and personal accidents while overseas

While convenient at airline checkout, flight insurance usually costs only a bit less than comprehensive travel insurance but covers far less. Travel insurance often delivers much better value for similar pricing—especially for international trips or longer holidays.

When choosing between the two, think about your travel pattern. For domestic or direct one-way flights, flight insurance may suffice for some. For international, multi-city, or higher-stakes trips, comprehensive travel insurance is almost always the wiser option—covering far more than just your flight so you can travel confidently.
