Which Type of Entertainment Credit Card is Best?

There are generally two kinds of entertainment credit cards: Cashback cards and rewards cards. Which should you choose?

Cashback Cards

Most Singaporeans like to use cashback credit cards, which allows you to get a percentage of your spending as a rebate, i.e. a discount off your next month’s bill. But to do so, you usually need to hit a minimum spending requirement, and there is a cashback cap. Cashback entertainment cards are best for those who go out regularly and have predictable spending patterns.

Rewards Cards

If you find it pressurizing to hit a minimum spending requirement each month, an entertainment rewards card is a good alternative. This is better for those whose spending and going out habits are rather unpredictable. Some rewards cards, like the HSBC Revolution Card, have no cap on the points earned. You can use your card to pay for the entire table’s alcohol bill if you like, without worrying about bursting the cap.

What Counts As Entertainment Spend?

While credit card spending categories like dining or groceries are pretty straightforward, it’s a little more challenging to define what exactly “entertainment” is. The answer varies slightly from credit card to credit card, but generally, entertainment spending encompasses these:

Bars & clubs

The entertainment category includes various drinking establishments including bars, KTV lounges and clubs. These are establishments under the merchant category code 5813 (Bars, Taverns, Lounges and Nightclubs).

Movies & ticketing

Entertainment spending typically includes movie tickets, whether bought online or offline (as long as the merchant is a cinema). It may also include other ticketed events, such as performances, plays or concerts, but check the credit card Terms and Conditions to be sure. We have listed a few of the best credit cards for movies, head over to our article if you re interested to learn more about it.

Cafes

Quite a few entertainment credit cards also include selected cafes under their cashback categories. These are usually big coffee chains such as Starbucks, Coffee Bean and TCC. Again, not every credit card counts these as entertainment, so check the Terms and Conditions.

Entertainment Credit Cards Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as entertainment spend?

Each credit card issuer defines entertainment spending slightly differently, so there are slight variations from card to card. Typically, entertainment covers movies and nightlife (bars, lounges and clubs). Some also include cafes and other ticketed events. Always check the terms & conditions of your credit card to be sure.

How can I decide which entertainment credit card is best for me?

It’s best to select a credit card based on your entertainment spending patterns. For example, if you only go out on weekends, you can choose a weekend entertainment credit card like the UOB YOLO Card or the OCBC FRANK credit card. However, be sure that you can hit the minimum spend, if any.

What kind of perks and benefits, in addition to (or instead of) rewards points or air miles, can I expect with an entertainment credit card?

Depending on the credit card you choose, you may get additional entertainment perks. For example, the HSBC Revolution Card entitles you to discounted Golden Village movie tickets via the HSBC Movie Card. The AMEX Platinum Credit Card is very much a “perks” credit card, offering 1-for-1 drinks at trendy cocktail bars around town.
