Travel insurance typically covers personal items—such as baggage, clothing, and other belongings—that are lost, stolen, or damaged while you are travelling. However, coverage always depends on the specific policy’s terms, conditions, and limits.

Most Singapore travel insurance plans will also provide some cover for lost cash or money, though this is usually limited and often only applies to theft, not simple misplacement.

Here are the key details you need to know about lost-item coverage with most Singapore travel insurance plans:

  • Coverage limits:

    • Standard policies usually pay between S$3,000 and S$5,000 total for lost, stolen, or damaged baggage. Higher-tier plans may offer up to S$10,000.

  • Sub-limits for valuables:

    • High-value items like electronics, jewellery, cameras, or watches are generally capped at lower per-item limits (often S$200–S$1,000 each).

  • Prompt reporting:

    • You must report the loss or theft to the relevant authority (police, hotel, airline, etc.) as soon as possible, typically within 24 hours of discovery, to support your claim.

  • Supporting documents required:

    • For claims, you’ll need original receipts, police or carrier reports, and where relevant, a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) from the airline.

  • Duty of care:

    • Travellers are expected to take reasonable care of their belongings; insurers may reject claims if items were left unattended, unsecured, or handled irresponsibly.

Many policies also include a benefit for baggage delay—if your luggage is temporarily delayed (but not permanently lost), you may be reimbursed for essential purchases. These payouts are usually in the range of S$100–S$200 per 6–12 hour delay window, up to an overall maximum per trip.

Common exclusions apply: consumables and perishables, as well as cash that was simply misplaced (rather than stolen), are often not covered. Not all kinds of loss will be reimbursed, so always check your individual policy’s exclusions.
