Maid Insurance in Singapore: What To Look Out For

Though MOM requires all Maid Insurance to provide at least Personal Accident coverage of $60,000 and Medical coverage of $15,000, there are still benefits in the policy you can take note of to make it worth your premium

Fact #1

Do not wait too long

Most insurers will require you to make the claim within 30 days of the occurrence. Given that it will take some time to process your claim, you would want to submit your claims form as soon as possible.

Keep originals of everything

Whatever you are choosing to make a claim for, you have to be able to prove its authenticity. This means producing original documents for the following: 1) Hospital receipts for medical claims, 2) Attending physician's statement, 3)Police reports for theft

Most insurers only cover up to B2 wards of public hospitals and a pro-ration factor will be applied should your maid be admitted into better wards or private hospitals

Here are some Maid Insurance tips that can help you select a great policy and give you peace of mind when hiring your foreign domestic helper.

Tip #1

Knowing whether the plan covers your helper's pre-existing conditions would be crucial as you would be more aware of the treatments that are not covered by the policy.

Tip #2

You should check if the policy you are getting covers dengue fever and malaria as some insurers actually do not cover these conditions.

Tip #3

You might want to consider the optional waiver of counter indemnity as it limits your liability on the $5,000 security bond to $250.

What is the $5,000 security bond and is it necessary?

A security bond is a binding pledge to pay the government (up to $5000) if you break the law or the conditions governing the employment of a helper. You need a bond for every helper you employ, unless she is Malaysian. Bonds usually take the form of an insurance. The insurers guarantee to pay the government should you break the rules; then the insurers pursue you for the money.

Why are the insurance periods 14 or 26 months when the work permits are issued at 12 or 24 months?

MOM requires all insurance and bond to have an additional 2 months of cover so that in any event or reason the maid overstays in Singapore after her work permit has expired, she is still covered under the insurance.

If my helper requires outpatient treatment, will the expenses be covered?

Outpatient treatment expenses are only covered when the injury is due to an accident. Also, do check the coverage under 'Outpatient Expenses' instead of 'Medical Coverage'.

Can I increase coverage for my domestic helper?

Yes. Most insurers would allow you to increase personal accident and medical coverage at additional premiums.

How do I compare Maid Insurance policies?

An important coverage to look out for is outpatient benefit. This covers the cost of medical treatment for your domestic helper due to accidents. If your domestic helper accidentally cut themselves while cooking and needs to see a doctor, this will be covered under outpatient medical expenses. Therefore, it would benefit you to consider a plan with higher outpatient coverage.
