What is Prudential Health Insurance in Singapore?

Prudential's PRUShield Integrated Shield Plans are designed to bridge the gap between Singapore's basic MediShield Life coverage and the actual costs of quality healthcare. While MediShield Life covers only Class B2/C wards in public hospitals with significant co-payment, PRUShield steps in with three tiers:

  • PRUShield Standard (public B1 and below),
  • PRUShieldPlus (public Class A), and
  • PRUShield Premier (private hospitals).

Each offers progressively higher coverage limits, "As Charged" benefits, and access to better ward classes.

Who Should Consider Prudential Health Insurance?

Choosing the right PRUShield plan becomes clearer when you see how it fits real-life scenarios. Here's how different life stages and situations align with Prudential's offerings.
Young families

PRUShield Plus + PRUExtra Plus CoPay

Why this plan?
  • Class A wards balance quality pediatric care with affordability (½ of private hospital costs)
  • Coverage grows with family where you can add newborns without re-application
  • Cashless claims eliminate upfront payment stress while juggling childcare logistics
SME & business owners

PRUShield Premier + PRUExtra Premier CoPay

Why this plan?
  • Private hospital speed gets you back to work in days, not weeks
  • Critical illness riders replace lost income if you’re unable to work for months
  • S$1.2 million limit means health crisis won’t force business asset liquidation or partner buyouts
Pre-retirees & seniors (Age 50+)

PRUShield Standard or Plus + PRUExtra Preferred CoPay

Why this plan?
  • To lock in cheaper premiums before age 65 and insurability declines
  • Rider's 5% co-insurance cap is critical as chronic conditions emerge in the 60s/70s
  • Renewable to age 75 locks coverage through statistically highest-need decades when switching becomes impossible
Budget-conscious individuals

PRUShield Standard (rider optional)

Why this plan?
  • S$150,000 limit adequate to cover 90% of common hospitalisations, and other concerns like appendectomies, fractures, and childbirth
  • Skip rider initially to minimise costs, and add later when income stabilises

How to Choose & Apply For Prudential Health Insurance

Choosing the right PRUShield plan doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the application process with confidence and support from MoneySmart's financial advisors.
Step 1

Get a quote from MoneySmart advisors

The best way to find the right PRUShield plan is to start with a conversation with our licensed MoneySmart financial advisors.

Whether it’s PRUShield Standard for cost-conscious coverage to Premier for full private hospital access, they’ll assess and walk you through your health needs, family situation, budget, and long-term goals to recommend the most suitable plan.
Step 2

Review eligibility & prepare documents

Before submitting your application, confirm you meet Prudential's basic eligibility criteria:
  • Singapore Citizen, PR, or eligible foreigner
  • Up to 75 years old; plan limits apply

Gather these documents too:
  • NRIC or passport
  • Income proof (payslips, tax returns)
  • Medical records for pre-existing conditions (if applicable)
Step 3

Submit application

Your advisor will guide you through the application form, ensuring all health declarations are accurate and complete.

Honest disclosure is critical, since undisclosed conditions may lead to claim rejections later.
Step 4

Complete medical checks

Depending on your age, health history, and selected coverage amount, Prudential may require:
  • Blood tests or urine samples
  • Medical examination by an approved panel doctor
  • Specialist reports for specific conditions

Your advisor will coordinate scheduling and explain what's needed.
Step 5

Underwriting, review, & first payment

Prudential will assess your application, medical information, and the whole underwriting review will take between 2–4 weeks.

Upon approval (standard, with exclusions / loadings, or rare decline), make your first payment via credit / debit card, GIRO, MediSave (up to CPF limits), or online banking.
Step 6

Policy delivery, access, & free-look period

Receive policy documents digitally or by mail. Access PRUServices online to view coverage, submit claims, and manage your policy. You have 14 days to review all terms and cancel for a full refund if the plan doesn't meet your needs.

Why Prudential PRUShield?

PRUShield provides consumers with a selection of riders to choose from to boost their coverage. There are 3 different riders for policyholders on the PRUShield Premier plan, and 2 riders for policyholders on the PRUShield Plus plan. This gives consumers the option to lower the 10% co-insurance cash payment to 5%, and to customise their private health insurance plan according to any additional health needs.
Prudential offers an electronic Letter of Guarantee of up to S$10,000. A Letter of Guarantee is an assurance of payment offered by the insurer to hospitals for part of the hospital bill covered by insurance. This will help to prevent high upfront costs and help to make your hospital admission process easier.

Other Factors Affecting Costs of Health Insurance Premiums

Setting realistic expectations about what you'll pay for PRUShield coverage (and what influences those costs) helps you budget confidently and choose the right plan for your long-term needs.

Age at entry

Premiums are lowest when you’re young and increase with age. Lock in coverage early to lower lifetime costs of premiums.

Health & medical history

Prudential assesses your current health and pre-existing medical conditions during underwriting. Outcomes include:

  • Standard premiums,
  • Premiums loading for chronic conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension),
  • Exclusions for specific conditions, or
  • Rare decline

Smoker status

Smokers pay higher premiums. Quitting may qualify you for reduced rates after 12 months smoke-free.

Claims-based pricing

If you make claims, your premium may increase at your next renewal. No claims? Your premium rises only due to age-band changes.

How to File Prudential Health Insurance Claims

Avoid these mistakes for a seamless policy claim:
  • Missing pre-authorisation forms (private hospitals)
  • Incomplete documentation
  • Undisclosed pre-existing conditions
  • Using non-panel providers (may face claim caps or higher out-of-pocket costs)

Cashless claims (Panel hospitals + PRUExtra rider)

  1. Book appointment via PRUPanel Connect
  2. Provider submits pre-authorisation to Prudential
  3. Receive electronic Letter of Guarantee (eLOG)
  4. At discharge, sign settlement forms and Prudential will pay hospital directly

Reimbursement claims (Non-panel or without rider)

  1. Pay hospital bill at discharge
  2. Collect original bills, discharge summary, doctor’s memo
  3. Submit via PRUServices app, MoneySmart financial advisor, or Prudential office
  4. Track claim status online
  5. Receive bank payout within 2–4 weeks

How to Renew Your Prudential Health Insurance

To update your Prudential health insurance, you can do so via PRUServices App or financial advisor:
  • Add / remove beneficiaries
  • Update contact information
  • Change payment methods (credit card, GIRO)
  • Request plan upgrades / downgrades (subject to underwriting)
  • Add riders at policy anniversaries (requires underwriting)

Remember, you have a 30-day grace period after the premium due date before policy lapses.

But if you’re looking to renew your Prudential health insurance policy, there are two methods to consider:

Method #1: Annual renewal process

  1. PRUShield renews automatically each year up to age 75
  2. Premium recalculates based on age band and claims experience
  3. Renewal notice sent 30-60 days before anniversary
  4. 30-day grace period for premium payment

Method #2: Premium changes at renewal

  1. Age increases → premium rises (age-band pricing)
  2. Claims filed → premium may increase (claims-based pricing)
  3. No claims → premium rises only due to age

FAQs About Prudential Health Insurance in Singapore

What is PRUShield health insurance in Singapore?

PRUShield is Prudential's Integrated Shield Plan that builds on MediShield Life to provide higher ward classes, greater coverage limits (up to S$1.2 million annually), and access to private hospitals. It covers Singapore Citizens, PRs, and eligible foreigners up to age 75.

How much does PRUShield cost in Singapore?

Premiums depend on your age at entry, health status, plan tier (Standard/Plus/Premier), smoker status, and optional riders. Younger, healthier applicants pay lower premiums. Use MediSave to pay premiums up to CPF-allowed limits.

For personalised quotes, consult a MoneySmart financial advisor.

What is the difference between PRUShield Standard, Plus, and Premier?

  • Standard: Public hospital B1 wards and below, S$150,000 annual limit
  • Plus: Public hospital A wards, S$600,000 annual limit
  • Premier: Private hospital standard rooms, S$1,200,000 annual limit

Plus and Premier plans cover most treatments "As Charged" (full bill up to annual limits).

Can I pay for PRUShield using MediSave?

Yes, PRUShield premiums can be paid using MediSave up to CPF-allowed limits. This reduces your cash outlay while maintaining coverage.

How do I file a cashless claim with PRUShield?

To file a cashless claim with PRUShield, you’ll need to:
  1. Book your appointment via PRUPanel Connect.
  2. Your provider submits pre-authorisation to Prudential and you receive an electronic Letter of Guarantee (eLOG).
  3. At discharge, Prudential pays the hospital directly
  4. You sign settlement forms without upfront payment (PRUExtra rider required).

If you don’t have a PRUExtra rider, you can still claim by paying bills upfront first before filing for reimbursement. Ensure all necessary documents are submitted (e.g. doctor’s memo, discharge summary, original bill) and banks will payout within 2–4 weeks.

What are the main exclusions under PRUShield?

Main PRUShield exclusions include:
  • Pre-existing conditions (unless declared and accepted),
  • Cosmetic or elective procedures,
  • Self-inflicted injuries,
  • Experimental treatments not approved by Singapore medical authorities, and
  • General GP visits unrelated to covered admissions are excluded.

Always review full exclusions in your policy documents.

Can I renew my PRUShield policy after age 75?

Most PRUShield plans are renewable up to age 75. Renewal beyond 75 depends on specific plan terms, so check your policy documents or consult your financial advisor for age limit details.

Does making a claim increase my PRUShield premium?

Yes, PRUShield uses claims-based pricing. Premiums may increase at renewal if you've made claims. If you don't claim, premiums rise only due to age-band changes.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my PRUShield plan?

You can apply to upgrade (Standard → Plus → Premier) or downgrade at policy anniversaries, subject to underwriting. Upgrades may exclude new pre-existing conditions diagnosed since original application. Downgrades are generally easier but you lose higher-tier benefits.
